Nicholson Cemetery – The Grave of John Nicholson

One of the most historically important cemeteries is Nicholson Cemetery, near Kashmiri Gate.

The cemetery was established in 1857 following the enormous number of casualties during the Siege of Delhi. It was later named after Brigadier-General John Nicholson, one of the most prominent British military figures associated with the capture of Delhi during the uprising of 1857.

Nicholson was born in Ireland and served in the Bengal Army. During the 1857 uprising, he commanded the main storming party during the British assault on Delhi. He was shot during the fighting and died from his wounds on 23 September 1857.

His grave remains one of the best-known graves in the cemetery.

Nicholson became such a legendary figure among some British soldiers that he was popularly known as "The Lion of Punjab."

But Nicholson is not the only interesting person buried here.

The cemetery also contains the graves of other colonial-era soldiers and civilians, including Harvey Greathead, associated with the Delhi Field Force, as well as Master Ramchander, an important 19th-century mathematician and educator who worked to promote modern science and social reform in India.

For a visitor interested in family history, however, some of the less famous graves can be even more fascinating.

Behind the names on these stones are stories of ordinary soldiers, officers, civil servants, women and children who lived in Delhi during one of the most dramatic periods of India's history.

Lothian Cemetery – One of Delhi's Oldest Christian Burial Grounds

Another important site is Lothian Cemetery, near Kashmiri Gate.

Established in 1808, it is regarded as one of the oldest Christian cemeteries in Delhi. Many of its burials date from the 19th century, including people connected with the East India Company and European military and civilian communities. Many graves are associated with the turbulent events of 1857.

The Archaeological Survey of India records that Lothian Road Cemetery contains numerous graves, including those of relatives of Lt. Col. James Skinner, with many burials dating from 1857.

St. James' Church – The Skinner Family and William Fraser

Near Kashmiri Gate stands the historic St. James' Church, also known as Skinner's Church.

It was founded by Colonel James Skinner, the famous military officer who raised the cavalry regiment known as Skinner's Horse.

Skinner himself is buried in a marble vault beneath the church, while members of his family are buried in the Skinner family enclosure in the churchyard.

The churchyard also contains the tomb of William Fraser, an important British official who served as Commissioner of Delhi and was assassinated in 1835.

The graves around St. James' Church provide a remarkable connection between Delhi's Mughal past, the East India Company period and the dramatic transformation of the city during the 19th century.

Delhi War Cemetery

For those researching military ancestors, Delhi War Cemetery is another important destination.

The cemetery contains more than 1,100 Commonwealth burials from the First and Second World Wars, representing personnel from Britain, India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Poland and other countries.

Among those commemorated are officers and servicemen from many famous British and Commonwealth regiments.

The cemetery also contains a Stone of Remembrance and a Cross of Sacrifice, characteristic features of Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries.

For families whose relatives served in India during the World Wars, visiting Delhi War Cemetery can be an extremely meaningful experience.
