The most underrated fort of Rajasthan explained.

Bundi, a peaceful and charming town in Rajasthan, is famous for its blue houses, stepwells, and the majestic Bundi Fort, also known as Taragarh Fort. This fort is one of the oldest and most beautiful hill forts of India, known for its Rajput architecture, massive gates, beautiful murals, and breathtaking views of the Aravalli hills.

If you want to explore a hidden gem away from crowded tourist spots, Bundi Fort is a perfect place.

History of Bundi Fort (Taragarh Fort)

Bundi Fort was built in AD 1354 by Rao Deva, the founder of Bundi. It was one of the first strongholds of the Hada Chauhan Rajputs, a powerful warrior clan of Rajasthan.

For centuries, the fort served as the main defense point of Bundi kingdom. It played an important role in Rajput–Mughal encounters and stood as a symbol of pride and bravery. Several rulers of Bundi added palaces, gates, murals, and temples inside the fort, giving it a unique mix of art and defense architecture.

 Architecture of Bundi Fort

Bundi Fort is built on a steep hill and is known for its massive stone walls, strong bastions, and beautiful palaces inside. The fort offers some of the best views of the old Bundi city.

Main architectural features:

1. Massive Battlements & Gates

The fort has strong gates such as Lakshmi Pol, Guda Gate, and Hathi Pol, built to stop enemy attacks.

2. Steep Climb & Hill-Top Location

Located 1,426 feet above sea level, the fort gives a panoramic view of Bundi’s blue houses, lakes, and forests.

3. Beautiful Palaces Inside the Fort

  • Garh Palace

  • Phool Mahal (Palace of Flowers)

  • Badal Mahal (Palace of Clouds)

  • Chitra Mahal (Painted Palace)

These are famous for their murals showing the stories of Krishna, festivals, hunting, and royal life.

4. Bundi Murals (Frescoes)

Bundi is world-famous for its mural paintings, known as Bundi School of Art. These murals use bright colors and natural themes like peacocks, flowers, and forests.

 Major Attractions Inside Bundi Fort

1. Garh Palace

A grand palace complex with nicely preserved wall paintings.

2. Chitrashala (The Art Gallery)

Known for some of the best Rajput murals in India.

3. Rani Mahal

A beautiful residence built for royal queens.

4. Badal Mahal

A palace built on a higher level with views of clouds and hills.

5. Bhim Burj (Viewpoint)

One of the largest battlements of Rajasthan with a massive cannon placement area.

6. Stepwells (Baoris)

The fort has water storage places and wells used during long sieges.

Best Time to Visit Bundi Fort

  • October to March – Pleasant weather

  • Avoid summer afternoons as the climb is steep and the area becomes very hot.

Entry Fee & Timings (Approx.)

  • Indian tourists: ₹50 to 200 INR

  • Foreign tourists: ₹300 INR

  • Opening time: 8:00 AM

  • Closing time: 5:00 PM

Travel Tips for Visiting Bundi Fort

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes; the climb is steep.

  • Carry water—no shops inside the fort.

  • Hire a licensed tour guide to understand the murals and history.

  • Visit early morning or late afternoon for the best light for photography.

  • Be careful around monkeys at some spots.
